Lunch at Gilbey’s Bar & Restaurant Eton

Every month Miranda and I meet either in London or in Didcot (Oxfordshire), this time we decided to change it up a bit and meet in Windsor for our catch up lunch!

We chose Gilbeys in Eton as it’s one of the best restaurants in Berkshire I know and is recommended highly on Tripadvisor.

Gilbey’s

Our table was booked for 13:45 and Miranda was running a little late, so I had time to flick through their menu and spotted their set menu which runs throughout the week! Available Monday-Saturday Lunch 12pm-3pm Sunday-Thursday ALL Evenings.

Early Evenings Friday & Saturday 6pm-7pm lunch & early evening set menu 2 courses £23.00 | 3 Courses £30.00

Once Miranda (A July Dreamer) arrived we ordered tap water for the table, a Raspberry Prosecco which went right to my head! Miranda chose their Old Mout, Berries & Cherries Cyder as she loves everything sweet and this was the perfect drink for her!

We chose their lunch set menu, our lovely waiter Kalina was very attentive and so welcoming – I swear we had the best corner table in the restaurant it was a very hot day and we were sat by a wide window facing Eton high street.

Miranda ordered for starters a hot watercress, pea & leek soup [hot or chilled] [V] Gorgonzola, pea shoots, seed bread, (baring in mind it was 30 degrees outside – mad) but she thought it was delicious so she didn’t mind that the soup was piping hot.

For her mains  Grilled Scottish Prawns & Squid Mediterranean vegetables, aïoli, fries – everything was juicy!

For her dessert she chose Duo of Ice Creams salted caramel, vanilla – sadly Miranda wasn’t eating fast enough (us chatting away) and her ice creams melted and so she got more of the salty flavour rather than the sweet flavour- she however loved the taste at the beginning.

For my starter I chose their Sun-Blushed Tomato Cheesecake [V] summer leaves, artichokes, fig balsamic dressing – it was absolutely delicious, it was so creamy and not overly filling – it being a hot day I wanted to eat something light, all the elements came together perfectly in this dish – I highly recommend!

I also chose the grilled prawns for my mains – absolutely delicious, the squid was tender and the prawns still had shells on them which kept the flavours and juice within making the meat succulent.

For dessert I chose their Vanilla & Elderflower Panna Cotta strawberries, honeycomb – it was a decent sized portion and very creamy, a perfect palette cleanser.

We highly recommend Gilbey’s Eton, they also have one in Amersham. It’s been years since I’ve eaten here and it was just as good as I remember it, the kitchen closes at 15.00 and they were still welcoming guests in at 14.45, from 15.00 to 18.00 they still serve drinks only at their bar so if you fancied something refreshing to quench your thirst this is a great place! Kalina was so lovely, and very informative about where to best park and throughout our meal she was amazing!
