Taro Kennnington

Dinner at Taro, Kennington London

Taro is a Japanese restaurant serving ramen and sushi.

Taro Kennington opened late last year, we were so excited to have a different restaurant nearby and one that is also so well known! We’ve been going to Taro Soho for years now so I was so excited to see that they had opened another branch so close to me!

Since its been open we’ve been ordering takeaways through Deliveroo which is so convenient although I feel it can be a bit pricey but it’s well worth it. Especially my favourite Salmon Teriyaki Bento Box! (Generous portions)

Last week my sister and I spontaneously booked a table at Taro Kennington, as we knew it would get full quickly, being a Friday evening. My sister Wingy was already there, we had a lovely table along the side wall, Wingy was facing the kitchen so she could see the chefs cook delicious food! The interior was classic with wooden surroundings and matching wooden chairs.

We thoroughly looked through their menu, there were so many options we were spoilt for choice! Although after a lot arrin’.. and hummin’ we decided to share some starters and pick our mains!

Drinks –

Sho Chiku Bai Classic Junmae Sake (naturally brewed)

Mio Sparkling Sake

Starters –

Chicken gyoza

Salmon Avocado Tempura

Our mains –

Tonkotsu Ramen

Salmon Teriyaki Bento Box with miso soup

First our sakes arrived my sister ordered the Sho Chiku Bai – mild and smooth and I ordered the Mio Sparkling – sweet and bubbly – I love this drink however it was slightly overpriced £9 for 100ml but we wanted to treat ourselves, as it was payday!

We didn’t wait long for our gyoza to arrive crispy on the outside and soft in the inside just how we love them. The Salmon Avocado Tempura came straight after, we did have to ask for small dipping plates as they didn’t provide this when our starters arrived but it didn’t stop us from enjoying our food – we loved the fact the rice was still warm and the salmon and avocado just melted in our mouths, we always love a ripe avocado as it makes the dish a lot more smooth with a crispy bite from the Tempura. We love ours dipped in soya sauce, how do you like yours? I’m just salivating thinking about it!

My miso soup arrived soon after, with our mains Wingy ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen and I had the Salmon Teriyaki Bento Box, both portion sizes were huge – we were definitely eating with our eyes but we managed to devour it all! Wingy thought it was nice but not as good as the ones she’s had in Japan; the broth was flavoursome not too salty just right in flavour!

My Salmon Teriyaki Bento Box was delicious, I couldn’t fault it! The food was filled to the brim and beautifully presented. I strongly recommend this meal as it’s worth every penny! The teriyaki sauce blends well with the salmon and rice. I loved the sashimi slices – tuna and salmon my favourites, and prawn maki and salmon.. mmm.. yum.. edamame beans were tasty too although I felt it should have been a bit more salty, not forgetting the miso soup which I never accomplished to finish as the main event arrived too quickly.

Taro Kennington had a buzzing atmosphere and the restaurant did get full fast. As much as we loved our meal the service was great to begin with quick and helpful but nearer to the end, when we wanted to pay, he service got much slower and we weren’t attended as much.

We paid at the counter other than that Taro Kennington is a thumb up from us! This restaurant welcomes everyone, it is open everyday at 12pm and closes at 10pm apart from Sunday’s when they close at 9.30pm. A short walk from Oval tube station or close by there are easy access to buses.
