I’m so grateful that my office is surrounded by so many delicious eateries and I can easily pop into one at lunch. 31 Below being one of them, last week two of my work colleagues and I paid a visit. I never knew there was a cosy and modern bar restaurant nearby. The restaurant was filled with plants, there were scrubs that intertwined with some fairy lights that dangled along the wall creating a botanical and relaxed atmosphere.
31 Below is located on Marylebone high street, accessible from either Baker Street or Regents Park tube station. It is a cafe bar by day and by night the basement is transformed, and the venue is filled by a buzzing atmosphere after 6pm.
We were sat in one of their booths giving us a bit of privacy to chatter away. It didn’t take long for our waiter to welcome us and take our order;
– Galician octopus, paprika, garlic, lemon & aïoli & Green beans, almonds & lemon.
– British flat iron steak, mojo verde sauce & Skin on skinny fries, rosemary salt
– Double British beef burger, cheddar (all burgers served with skin on skinny fries).
We didn’t have to wait long for our food:
Elsa had the Galician octopus, paprika, garlic, lemon & aïoli & Green beans, almonds & lemon.
Elsa’s thoughts:
“Presentation was aesthetically pleasing. The octopus was tender and well cooked. It wasn’t rubbery or over done. It went very well with the alioli. The octopus was a little salty but over all it was a good flavour. I really liked the broad beans as they were buttery and I enjoyed the crunchy almonds.”
Holly had the British flat iron steak, mojo verde sauce –
“It was very yummy. Melt in the mouth, cooked how I asked it to be (rare) and presented in an aesthetically pleasing way”
And for her sides the skin on skinny fries, rosemary salt – crispy and delicious.
I had the Double British beef burger, cheddar, smoked dry cured bacon, burger sauce – it was tasty and I especially enjoyed the crispy bacon as it married well with all the flavours, however I felt there was too much oil coming off the beef burger and it was soaking into the bap. It had rosemary salt skinny fries to accompany it! Delicious!
I would definitely go back their food was tantalising good, my colleagues wolfed their mains down, the service was impeccable – we didn’t have to wait long to be served and the food came in a fashionable time, leaving us 10 minutes to spare to head back to the office! It was a shame we had to leave without dessert but there’s always next time!
Loving the look of the restaurant, nice and quiet amidst the hustle and bustle of London

It’s so important not to overcook octopus, and this restaurant seems to have cooked this dish correctly. I particularly like the look of the flat iron steak.
