Lunch at The Greene Oak, Windsor Berkshire

The Greene Oak is a gastro pub in between Windsor and Bray. The drive through the rural Windsor forest is beautiful and you can’t miss it as it sits on the corner of Oakley Green Rd and Dedworth Rd. The owners of this quaint pub are culinary chefs James Lyon Shaw and Jamie Dobbin, they first met and worked together in the kitchen of the famous Ivy restaurant in London.

My sister chose this restaurant for our family meal this weekend. We had dinner here years ago before it got revamped and we were excited to go back!

The Greene Oak

The newly refurbished pub has a contemporary style interior with a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere, with wooden tables and upholstered chairs.

Our parents were waiting for us as we were running late – my sister [Wingy] mistakenly booked the table for 4 but the waiters were so considerate that they were able to fit another table on the end for us. Our waiter for that afternoon was Kris he was professional, friendly and made us feel very welcome.

When I first glanced at the menu I wanted to try everything – they have a hearty range of dishes, and I couldn’t resist checking out their dessert section, so I realistically planned what to eat to save myself for the desserts.

Regrettably, I wished I did opt for a starter, as Wingy’s and Mum’s starters looked and smelt amazing! 👌 I was very envious of both of their dishes!

Mum chose the Brixham King Scallops, bath chaps, pickled apples – I was lucky enough to try some; the scallops were delicate with a subtle apply flavour, delicious – I would have happily devoured them! Wingy chose their Spiced parsnip and Brambley Apple soup, pickled walnuts, gingerbread – [I also had a taste] very tasty, a rich creamy parsnip soup.

After they finished, it was a reasonable amount of time until our mains came: two 45 day aged rare breed steaks with bone marrow mushrooms, onion rings, triple cooked chips; one 220g Red Poll flat iron cooked medium rare and 450g Shorthorn sirloin cooked well done. Both with delicious flavours, my Dad loves his meat cooked to well done [sirloin], personally it’s a bit tough for me but he happily enjoyed it. Chris [my sisters partner] also thought his was tasty too although he did think it was a little over done but the flavour was exceptional. They both wiped their plates clean.

Mum chose their Salt baked cauliflower, truffled woodland mushrooms, Berkswell cheese – sadly I wasn’t able to try this as she had annihilated the whole plate, all I heard was ‘mmmm’, she is quite hard to please when it comes to food, having owned a restaurant herself, so I think I’ll take her response as a thumbs up!

Wingy chose their Brixham hake, sea vegetables, mussels, champagne sauce – luckily I was able to try some! –  the fish was so tender it literally melted in my mouth, the flavour was phenomenal with a tasty sauce that married everything together – highly recommend this dish! The mains I chose was their Steamed Elberry Cove mussels, white wine, garlic cream, chips – could not fault this dish either, it was absolutely delightful, the sauce was creamy, the dish was light and a generous amount of mussels, their chips was tasty too – thick, crispy and with a fluffy middle just how I like them, in fact my family enjoyed them too as they were all eyeing them up [as I tend to save the best to last!].

After everyone had cleared their plates, we asked for the dessert menu – best dessert menu by far for 2019, a great range of mouthwatering flavours; I was very indecisive however I chose their White chocolate and pistachio cake, black forest ripple ice cream – I cannot turn down white chocolate, as it is my favourite after all! The white chocolate and pistachio complimented each other well, and the moist cake was very scrumptious, even the black forest ice cream was delicious too! Chris and Wingy had the same and my parents shared a Sticky toffee pudding, honeycomb ice cream, butterscotch – rich in flavour – Dad was speechless and did not waste anytime finishing his half and Mum on the other hand took her time and savoured her share.

I highly recommend this pub the atmosphere was lively and during our lunch the pub started getting fuller. Kris was a great host, he was the one who recommended Wingy the Hake dish over steak but to be honest from the sound of everyone’s ‘mmm..ing’ either would have been enjoyable! This pub is great for all, friends and family are all welcome! They also have a private dining area for dinner parties or meetings. I must advise it would be handy to have a car if you don’t live nearby, the pub restaurant is located in a rural area, but they do have plenty of car parking spaces. They also have seating outside, a beautiful courtyard that leads into the pub restaurant – I can see it being very busy in the summer! I would advise to book to avoid any disappointment.

The Greene Oak’s opening times are as follows – Monday to Saturday 11am to 11pm and Sunday’s they open from 11am to 10.30pm.

    1. I know! I think it was my first time in a long time that I turned down a starter but I didn’t think I had it in me to have a dessert if I opted for one 😐
